Gentle Scar Tissue Mobilization: 6-8 Weeks Postpartum
Gentle Scar Tissue Mobilization: 6-8 Weeks Postpartum
This video demonstrates gentle scar mobilization techniques for c-section or perineal scar tissue, which is typically appropriate around 6-8 weeks postpartum and the incision is fully healed and cleared by your healthcare provider. The goal is to restore mobility, reduce tightness, and support abdominal and pelvic function — not to rush healing or aggressively stretch the tissue.
How to perform this safely:
Begin with superficial, gentle movements, then gradually increase as tolerated
Mobilize the scar in small, slow motions, horizontally & vertically without causing pain
Focus on relaxation and deep, even breathing when performing movements
Gradually progress from touch around the scar to directly on the scar to gentle tissue stretching, always staying within comfortable range
Practice to avoid:
Do not apply sharp, forceful pressure
Do not stretch or pull beyond comfort
Do not ignore pain or increased sensitivity
Do not continue if scar shows signs of irritation, redness, swelling, or drainage
Seek Guidance if you notice:
Persistent pain, burning, or pulling
Redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge
Any regression in healing or discomfort that lingers after activity
This video is educational only and does not replace individualized care. If you are unsure whether this is appropriate for you, or if you have complications related to your C-section/perineal scar tissue, please consult your healthcare provider or a pelvic health physical therapist.
*You should be feeling generally stable and your scar tissue should appear fully healed. You may perform scar mobilization as long as your provider has not advised against direct mobilization.
