Ultrasound For Blocked Mammary Ducts

What if you could prevent mastitis?

You actually can!

We are happy to now offer therapeutic ultrasound for breastfeeding mothers experiencing symptoms of blocked ducts. According to Lavigne et. al (*), women experiencing symptoms of a blocked duct who received an average of 3.3 ultrasound sessions were able to improve milk flow and avoid blocked ducts turning into mastitis.

Cost:

$50 for single treatment session (~20 minutes) - treatment on single breast with blocked duct

$80 for single treatment session (~30-40 minutes) - treatment on both breasts with blocked ducts

$135 for 3 single treatment sessions - 10% discount for 3 separate sessions

Note: All ultrasound treatments take place at clinic site as this modality is not portable.

What is a blocked duct? “when the breast has an area of localized milk stasis” that often presents with pain, breast engorgement, present with an area of bluish color, and/or present with white, painful bleb at nipple. Breastfeeding can be very painful with a blocked duct.

What are the causes of blocked ducts? “insufficient emptying of the breast; not positioning the nursing baby properly on the breast; waiting too long between feedings; supplementing nursing with bottle-feeding; use of a pacifier; certain infant behaviors while breastfeeding (tugging, pulling, or twisting of the nipple by the infant); carrying heavy front-holding infant carriers, heavy purses, or diaper bags; and or wearing bras that are too tight”.

How long should I wait to receive treatment? The sooner you are able to receive treatment, the better! Call/text: 434-922-0340 to schedule an appointment ASAP. If you have developed a fever, have body aches, and breast is hot/inflamed — it is too late. You would want to contact your primary care provider at that point to prevent worsening of infection and receive appropriate treatment.

What is Therapeutic Ultrasound? A coupling gel is applied to the ultrasound head and placed directly on the affected area (over breast). The ultrasound head is moved in a circular motion over the painful area or blocked duct by the therapist. The ultrasound waves generate an electrical signal and pass through the skin cause a vibration of the local soft tissues which can cause deep heating locally. (**)

What Ultrasound Gel is Used?

“With a 99% natural formulation free of dyes, parabens and propylene glycol, EcoVue® Ultrasound Gel is gentler on patients and delivers exceptional glide and image quality with less mess and waste.”

Safer for you AND baby!

Should I bring my baby? Yes! If you are able, it is most helpful to have baby nurse on treated breast following ultrasound treatment to help encourage improved milk flow. Depending on the time of the treatment session, you will be able to nurse either in the treatment room or the comfortable waiting area without feeling rushed.

How long do treatments take? The total time of ultrasound treatment is 8-10 minutes per breast/affected area on breast. For planning purposes, plan to be there about 20-30 minutes to meet therapist, receive ultrasound treatment, and nurse baby following treatment if able.
